What’s truly abhorrent about this situation is how the Trump administration, this US Supreme Court, AG Brenna Bird and the Republican dominated Board of Regents act as if black Americans have never been discriminated against in higher education. As a society, we SHOULD be offering scholarships to minorities who have suffered centuries of roadblocks. We SHOULD be doing everything in our power to encourage diversity in admissions and hiring. These used to be laudable goals. Now they’re forbidden. And for what? To give whites even more of an advantage than we already have. It’s shameful and wrong. I don’t care what the SUPCO says.
I got my PhD from the U of Iowa chemistry department and I'm a third generation educator. The actions of our elected officials in Iowa have been cruel, ignorant, dismissive, and just plain greedy.
I began my academic career in the University of Iowa Chemistry Department. In my junior year I transferred to the Biochemistry Department, and received my B.S. there, with a minor in Chemistry. I owe so much to the University and to the Chemistry Department and, honestly, to students such as Dr. Totton. Thank you Randy for putting the spotlight on this issue. You are correct, Dr. Totton's wishes should be honored, not discarded. The corruption of Gov. Reynolds and AG Bird is what needs to pass away in Iowa.
Thanks Randy. Sounds like a bit of CYA by the university. I'm sure they also would love to get their hands on that money for purposes other than that for which it was intended. I'm sure there's plenty of private schools which would jump at the chance to offer that scholarship.
But as an alum of our regents universities, this really saddens me because our state institutions can point to many examples of being open and even ground breaking in being a place where people of all colors and backgrounds have an opportunity to excel. This is not in the best of those traditions -- and, even if the bottom line of our current leadership is just business growth and investment, it's not the right message in a state with a stagnant population where employers are looking for people with talent, skills and productivity regardless of socio-economic and cultural backgrounds. It's bad for business. We should be able to attract and cultivate a workforce as well as we grow corn and beans.
